The Amazing Omega-3

There is so much information in the press about the benefits of Omega-3’s on your health. It is hailed as the drug of choice, but do beware: a new study suggests that you can have too much of a good thing, so stick to two portions of oily fish a week. Here are some more-mind boggling benefits:

  • Reduces stress and anxiety (Ohio State University)
  • Increases the effectiveness of aspirin (Chemistry & Biology)
  • Lowers your risk of Alzheimer’s disease (Oregon Health and Sciences University)
  • Adds two years to your life expectancy (Harvard School of Public Health)
  • Reduces your chances of skin canceromega 3 fish (University of Manchester)

It is important to point out that deep sea dwellers, eg. tuna and mackerel, are good sources of omega-3’s, but they are also practically dripping in mercury. the solution is to substitute them for herring, sardines and anchovies. They might be small but they are just as high in omega-3’s found a Scandinavian study. Because these fish are lower on the food chain it means that they are lower in toxic metals too!
