A glass of milk a day may delay knee osteoarthritis in women

Knee osteoarthritis (OA) currenly has no cure, but new reserach shows that drinking milk every day has been linked to reduced progression of the disease.

The researchers also found that women who ate cheese actually experienced an increase in progression of the disease. The high concentrations of fatty acids in cheese were associated with an increased incidence of bone marrow lesions, which may predict OA progression. . The study found that their findings were not applicable to men, and that yoghurt did not affect OA progression.

OA, which is characterised by degeneration of cartilage and its underlying bone in a joint, is believed to result from “mechanical and molecular events in the affected joint”, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).  The authors of the study say milk consumption has been acknowledged as playing an important role in bone health, but until now, its role in the progression of knee OA has been unknown.

This study was published in the American College of Rheumatology Journal, Arthritis Care & Research.
